They stand alone on the mountaintops of Maine, a reminder of the days when “GUARDIANS OF THE FORESTS” stood tall against the menace of forest fires.

Read along and join the watchmen as they recall vivid memories of their days in the towers.  Hear the wives tell their stories of life in the woods.

Inside you will find a variety of facts and stories as told by the watchers themselves; where the towers were and where they are now.  A collection of over 200 photographs helps to piece the story together of the “Forest Fire Lookouts of Maine”.

About the Author:

Born on November 17th,1960, David N Hilton grew a love for Forest Fire Lookouts at an early age.  As a kid he would spend time in the Mt. Agamenticus Fire Tower in York, ME.  In 1991, when the Maine Forest Service closed all of the fire towers in Maine, he organized a group of volunteers to staff three fire towers in York County.  Mt. Agamenticus Fire Tower in York, Mt. Hope Fire Tower in Sanford and Ossipee Hill in Waterboro were staffed every year with volunteers.  Today, the three towers are not as active as they were in the 1990′s, but they still stand ready for use.

In May of 2003 we lost David to a sudden heart attack.  A memorial was built in his honor at the base of the Mt. Agamenticus Fire Tower and dedicated in 2004.
